remember that roommate who used to sleep with a knife under her pillow?

turns out she was SO RIGHT. and now, a short quiz:

1. why are there enough flies in my house to reenact a certain william golding novel?
2. why do i have the air conditioning blowing at 10:55 pm?
3. why are hubs and i revisiting our debate about the merits vs. evils of television?

answer: we got burgled!

hubs thought i was joking when i told him. the police officer believed me, and after he was done taking a report and basically telling me not to hold my breath, Little offered him a dollar for his trouble.

the post-theft thrill is wearing out and now i sort of feel like i did when i finally got those glasses in junior high and realized it wasn't that cool and, in fact, was a little bit of a pain.

i mean, if they really needed our flat screen tv and playstation that badly, they could have just asked me for it.

SHA! but seriously, i did get to call 911, which was just as awesome as you hope it's going to be. actual detectives will be coming to my house.

if i sound flippant, it's only because everything i really care about is still safe and sound. i'm thankful. also i got to put "evidence" in bags to be fingerprinted. oh yes, i did.

Man that sucks!! But I am thankful that everyone is safe! And that Little is generous. ;) That is too cute. But more important that you are all safe. Things can (or not) be replaced. Did you have renter's insurance? May Heavenly Father keep watching over you and your family!

That stinks. Share the whole story...come on.

OMGoodness, Sherry! That's really scary. I'm glad you're all safe.

And all this just moments after you'd declared your childhood officially over.

Our neighborhood's been burgled three times (that I know of) since we moved here, but we've been lucky enough to have never been hit. One time the burglars took a camera out of our neighbor, the police chief's, family car---it was in his garage but the police chief car was parked very visibly outside!

To me, burglars are like cockroaches and you know how I feel about cockroaches. That's all I have to say about that.

I forgot to mention the merits of not having a television. We haven't had one since before Christmas. And honestly we don't miss it! J's parents offered to give us their old television (actually it would be an excuse to buy a new one, probably flat screen.) I told him it was his decision because I didn't feel the need to have one. He debated with himself over the whole thing and decided not to have them bring it.

As the added bonus, you don't have to pay for cable and waste time watching mindless tv. I do watch a couple of shows online, but that's it. We watch movies on J's work computer. Not great but it works. We might get a tv one day but who knows. We love it this way!

Oh man!! So sorry to hear. But at least it was just the TV and game system and you guys are safe.

Still sucks though.

is it bad that at the end of this post, my first thought was, "awesome!" i promise it was only about the evidence bags to be fingerprinted. i'm glad you're safe. honest.

Were you home when it happened? Man - o - I'm sorry. I'm still working out the repercussions of the breakin at chez moi senior year.

Bar the windows,
Bolt the doors
Buy an attack dog (or borrow Libby)
Carry pepper spray
Install motion lights (clapper activated if needed)
Perfect your Tai Kwon Do
Leave your valuable "things" on the porch.
Come to Springville without delay where my lonely self will protect you!!

SO relieved everyone was ok. That was scary news!!!

And I totally agree with everything Natalie says!

thanks, ever'body! i already know it wasn't you.

here's more of the story, since janae asked: i got home after spending about 5 hours at my sister's place swimming with the girls. i noticed the back door was open. i specifically remembered locking it because i often DON'T (or didn't) and i only did that day as sort of an afterthought. i had liv with me, but not ally (i left her at lauren's to go home with bim after work) and i walked slowly through the house looking in all the rooms and behind all the doors (and shower curtains :-)). it was on my way back outside that i first noticed the side window open and the screen slashed. then i went to see if our TV was still there. sure enough, it was gone. they took a few other things but we really don't own much of value to anyone but us.

i left the house, just in case, and went to the neighbors one by one to see if they'd noticed anything weird, and to tell them to make sure they locked up when they were out. then i called the police and waited on the porch for them to show up.

an exciting day, no?
