i need advice.
certain rooms in my house have developed an unpleasant, mmm...geriatric sort of odor. (maybe it has always smelled this way and i didn't detect it until my pregnant smeller took on superhuman powers?) every night i throw all the windows open. still, by afternoon the entity is back. it's killing me softly.
what is the best way to freshen a room? please be specific. sprays? plug-ins? a heavy dusting of baking soda? i'll try (just about) anything.

I am so sorry....
Maybe Painting it if possible... I hope...
Plug ins work for us - but I guess they are just a topical fix??? But I will admit - we put one just as you walk into the house and people always think our house smells awesome. O, if they only were allowed past the entrance....that would be a problem.
But now that I think about it, all plug in smells ended up making me sick when I was pregnant and I unplugged them. So maybe this is very bad advice.
I love the bath and body works candles. Can you use those with Little around? I also like the wallflowers but they are really strong, as Jacks said.
Another thing I like is the vacuum powder. You sprinkle it on the floor and wait and few minutes. Then vacuum it up and the scent lingers for awhile (days'ish). I don't know, there may be a good reason not to do it but it works for us.
How badly do you want it gone?! The BEST way...dust & mop EVERY room - but mop with only ammonia (lemon scented smells cleanest). It'll kill ya while cleaning - so don't sniff it too hard!! And wear gloves! :( But an hour later your house will smell FRESH. BEYOND FRESH...just plain, Clean. OR since you've got a sensitive nose and you're prego - could use ANY of the arm and hammer spray foams - (use the ones for pets)- spray on your beds, curtains (I've not had ANY discolorations), carpets....any bad scents should be gone within an hour.
My new favorite thing, which I have yet to get myself, are those scented sticks that you dip in the scented stuff and then turn upside down and they keep everything smelling beautifully for days and days, and then, when you need more smelly, you just flip them over again. They smell great and look cool too. Here is a link to what I am talking about if you couldn't figure it out from my very articulate description.

So there are lots of topical ways to get the odor out. I think it would bother me to know what was causing the odor. Did the previous owners have a pet, if not have you tested for mold? Both of these could cause the unpleasant aroma. Good luck!
P.S. I remember when you came over to my house right after I had Charley and you gave me some booties your mom had made. I should find those and send them to you! I was so touched. I also remember a few times have dinner at Grandma's house just the two of us and eating pork chops (not sure why I remember that). By the way, I don't think I ever really considered myself an "older" cousin, I always saw us as the same age and being so excited that I had a cousin my age and wishing we could have spent so much more time together!
Removing strange odors:
Step 1. Go get a large dog. (St. Bernard, German Shepherd, or Great Dane)
Step 2. Allow the dog to play outside in a pool, lake, river, sprinkling device, or the rain.
Step 3. Let the dog inside and close all of your doors and windows. Encourage the puppy to play and run throughout your home.
Step 4. Learn to love wet dog smell.
PROBLEM SOLVED!
Maybe you have a ghost.
