were our founding fathers christian as we sometimes hear and repeat? specifically, did they build our system of government on the tenets of christianity? i revere them as great, highly principled men, but i am not sure about the religion thing. something tickles my memory (i was a history major for a few minutes at byu), but we all know my memory is nothing to brag about. i read the john adams bio, so i knew he was unitarian and i think franklin & jefferson were more or less deists, or maybe freemasons like washington?so i thought i'd open up the question to you all as i do a little history refreshment course.
were they? did they view us as a christian nation? and, if you feel inclined to comment, how much do their religious/secular leanings matter to christianity's chance to thrive in america?
i need to find out more before i comment either way, but i will say that i'm not sure it matters to me which (if any) religion they identified with, so long as they made provisions for ALL of us to worship, or not worship, "according to the dictates of our own conscience." indeed, could it be that we threaten other citizens' religious rights when we assume that the state's moral code does/should conform to the moral code of christianity?

All I know for sure is that they wrote the Pledge of Allegiance.
good one. i think if i were running for anything i would take a firm stance against speech. a straight-up no-risk policy. i would remain mute until election day, at which time i would speak a single word.
